Hawks at Heat

7:30 PM ET, December 12, 2008
AmericanAirlines Arena, Miami, FL

The Atlanta Hawks are lacking a go-to player, someone they can look to for a big basket when the game’s on the line. There aren’t many players better at filling that role than Miami Heat star Dwyane Wade.

Coming off another clutch performance, Wade looks to help the Heat continue their home dominance of the struggling Hawks when the teams meet Friday night.

After last season’s 15-67 debacle, Miami (12-9) is off to a strong start thanks largely to Wade. He’s averaging 34.8 points during a four-game winning streak, the Heat’s longest since a nine-game run from Feb. 28-March 16, 2007.

Philadelphia at Cleveland - December 12, 2008

76ers at Cavaliers

7:30 PM ET, December 12, 2008
Quicken Loans Arena, Cleveland,
OH

The Cleveland Cavaliers pushed their winning streak to 10 in their last game. They may have to go for No. 11 without their starting center.

Zydrunas Ilgauskas might not play Friday for the Cavs (19-3), who will try to tie the longest win streak in franchise history as they close out a home-and-home series with the Philadelphia 76ers.

Ilgauskas injured his left ankle in Wednesday’s 101-93 victory at Philadelphia, limping off the court with 9:39 left, although X-rays were negative.

Manchester United FC complete the first stage of the defence of their European title against Aalborg BK with Sir Alex Ferguson confident they are better placed to retain the trophy than they were after their last triumph.

Mean defence
Reflecting on his side’s success in qualifying from Group E with a game to spare, United’s manager said: “We have a good squad that has quality in depth as well as being bigger than last year’s. We are certainly better equipped to defend our trophy than we were after winning it in 1999.” Sir Alex, in his programme notes for the AaB match, said his first victorious squad were proved “naive tactically” but there is no danger of anyone making the same accusation of today’s team, who boast the competition’s meanest back line with just one goal conceded. Indeed another clean sheet against AaB will ensure their best defensive record in a UEFA Champions League group stage.

Even with qualification for the knockout rounds of the UEFA Champions League secure, Jesualdo Ferreira knows FC Porto’s “culture” of success means nothing less than 100 per cent effort will do when his side welcome Arsenal FC to the Estádio do Dragão.

‘Prestigious game’
Porto’s 2-1 win at Fenerbahçe SK on Matchday 5 coupled with Arsenal’s victory against FC Dynamo Kyiv, leaves both teams entering their final match in Group G assured of continued involvement in the competition. “There isn’t the normal pressure,” said the coach, while insisting he will not accept second best, whatever the circumstances. “The culture of FC Porto means we will go out to win,” he stressed. “It’s a prestigious game, there are three points up for grabs, and we will go for them.”

Villarreal CF coach Manuel Pellegrini insists he is “not overly concerned” by the battle for first place in Group E. He does, however, believe his side can become only the second club to defeat Celtic FC on home soil at this stage of the UEFA Champions League.

Exclusive distinction
FC Barcelona, who eased to a 3-1 triumph at Celtic Park in the 2004/05 campaign, currently hold the distinction of being the only team to beat the Bhoys on home turf in the group phase. Yet Villarreal have shown in recent seasons that they too are a force to be reckoned with in continental competition, and Pellegrini is confident his players can strengthen that reputation against a Celtic side who have failed to register a win in Europe this term.
